What is the difference: bacteriostatic water or sterile water?

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection has an additional preservative added to the water called benzyl alcohol (BnOH). Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid that has low toxicity and low vapor pressure. If you reconstitute solutions of growth hormone or peptide with plain sterile water, you must use the reconstituted solution within 2-3 days. But if the substance is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, it can be used for up to 3-4 weeks without destroying the substance.

Special warnings and precautions for use

The solvent contains benzyl alcohol, a preservative, which may cause anaphylactoid reactions.

Intravenous administration of preservative benzyl alcohol has been associated with serious adverse reactions in pediatric patients, including neonates characterized by central nervous system depression, metabolic acidosis, gasping for breath, cardiovascular failure. and haematological abnormalities (“panting syndrome”).

It is not used for neonatal drugs because of possible changes and toxicity of benzyl alcohol in blood pressure. If bacteriostatic water is injected intravenously without diluted compound, it can cause some lysis of red blood cells because it is isotonic.
