History of Anabolic Steroid use in Sport and Bodybuilding

History of Anabolic Steroid use in Sport and Bodybuilding

Brief History of Steroids in Sports

It is ingrained in humans to be competitive. Over time, this trait has been observed in almost every activity of life and even more so in sports. The history of anabolic steroids began as far back as the 1940s. However, it was in 1935 that a synthetic form of the sex hormone known as testosterone was first created.

The introduction of synthetic testosterone would mark the beginning of the history of steroids in sports, at least in the 20th century. At the 1952 Olympics, it was clear that steroids were already in widespread use. The Russian wrestling and weightlifting team is said to have doped itself with synthetic testosterone, among other things.

Since the 1950s, scientists have been in a wild race to develop the most effective steroids that would enhance the performance of competitive athletes and bodybuilders while providing little or no immediate detection. The competitive craze for finding performance-enhancing drugs among scientists around the world led to the development of anabolic steroids by a pharmaceutical company in the United States in 1958.

History of Anabolic Steroids in Bodybuilding

Now that anabolic steroids are available over the counter, their use in sports has only skyrocketed, especially from the 1950s to the late 1970s. The appeal of anabolic steroids to sportsmen and women is its strength gains, the ability to build muscle and the rapid recovery of muscle tensions incurred during intense exercise.

During this peak period of steroid use in competitive sports, shot put, football and bodybuilding were known as the most prevalent sports at that time.

While the use of drugs in sports was completely against the rules that apply to most sports organizations, the lack of sufficient knowledge about performance-enhancing drugs in general meant that athletes could continue doping with impunity.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) would publish its list of banned drugs and best practices for all athletes in 1964. However, anabolic steroids were not on this list, and competitive athletes would continue to abuse these drugs for 11 years. were officially listed on the IOC’s List of Prohibited Drugs.

In the bodybuilding world, the use of anabolic steroids is quite widespread. Since the early 1980s and much earlier (at least a few decades earlier), the use of performance-enhancing drugs by bodybuilders has been the worst kept secret in the history of steroids in sports.

In 1990, possession and use of non-prescription anabolic androgenic steroids would become illegal in the United States with the passage of the Anabolic Steroids Control Act 1990.

Dianabol is an oral anabolic steroid that was developed by John Ziegler, a physician in the 1950’s, as the steroid of choice for many competitive and non-competitive bodybuilders. D-bol, as this steroid would be called in the bodybuilding community, aids in weight gain programs.

Since the discovery of this steroid in the 1950s, bodybuilders have used the performance-enhancing drug to gain weight, build lean muscle mass, increase strength and increase endurance. The bodybuilding contest of Mr. Olympia in 1992 was won by Dorian Yates, a five-foot Englishman who weighed 270 pounds when he won the competition. Dorian was later known to combine his rigorous workouts with the use of a stack of steroids and growth hormones.

Dorian wouldn’t be the first or last bodybuilder whose secrets to a Herculean body would be revealed in the history of anabolic steroids. As long as there is honor and money to be made in competitive sports, the use of performance-enhancing drugs would prevail.

Finally

The history of steroids in sports ignores the use of anabolic steroids by non-competitive athletes and bodybuilders in particular, which has been on the rise for more than four decades.

Even though the Anabolic Control Act of 1990 is still in effect, the bodybuilding community, which includes both competitive and non-competitive bodybuilders, still holds and actively uses anabolic steroids despite the associated side effects, warnings, and dangers of steroid use.
